I can't answer your question re first and middle names but I think the UK is now one of the countries which require API. Not sure if it's airline specific but I certainly had to enter API when flying from Germany to the UK on LH (but not in the other direction IIRC.) In fact all three countries I travel to most frequently (US, UK, Japan) require API even if you hold a passport of the country you are travelling to.
