That hasn't been my experience.
I made a similar mistake recently--wrong return date, caught it within half an hour of purchasing. I called and was able to cancel without a problem. The AAgent said it was "just like it never happened," and that was it.
You were dealing with paper tickets that were being mailed to you? Maybe there's a difference if they are not e-tickets.
