I am a user of the AirTran Visa and it easy to accrue points for a free flight. I think you'll get a free trip after signing up. You earn a free one-way trip after just $8,000 in spending (8 credits) or a round-trip after just $16,000 in spending. Compare that to many other programs, which require $25,000 for a round-trip flight.
You're correct that AirTran only offers a Visa and not Amex. That's not unprecedented; DL only offers Amex and not Visa.
