But he gets lounge access, right? Lots of ORD-SFO flights to choose from; just get something with enough buffer that it's not an issue. Minimum of say, 4 hours... 6 might be better, just to make absolutely sure. With 6 hours you could even re-route safely through LAX or SEA and probably be OK.

I'm thinking United would be less inclined to help out if it was the situation that he'd gamed the system and figured out how to travel in the same class all the way through... but that's not the case. He's doing Y for the domestic part. Totally legit and understandable way to save some $$$ in my opinion, and likely that of a GA as well. But maybe I'm just deluded because I came across too many helpful GAs ^ on my recent mileage run?
