If you are flying to LAX but would not fly enough to make at least PLT level on AA (50K miles) I would suggest Virgin America. While I have not used them, from what I am able to gather their Y product is much better than others. Also, Jet Blue, particularly if you have other destinations and again would not be flying enough to reach mid tier status.
