OP, i think you hitted it right on the spot. My uncle is SAT based, flies a couple of meeting a yr to SAN and BWI. And his choice was AA or CO. And he stuck with CO because as you said AA maintainence seems to break down easily, and he doesn't care for the upgrades. He hates flying and wants to be flying minimal time.
