Delta/AMEX Double Miles Promo Denied!!!

Here's my very first post on FlyerTalk!! Wish it could've been for something positive. Anyhow here's my dilemma:

I received an offer from Delta/American Express called "Give Me Double Miles" which is a promo giving you double miles for all retrospective flights dating back to 07/01 (I think) and all future flights for the remainder of the year (12/31/09), for opening an account for the Delta/American Express Gold card.

The deadline for this promo was 09/30. I applied for the card way before this deadline but was declined to open an account, so I had given up on this promo. I then received a letter from American Express on 10/12 stating that they had made an error during my application process and declined my account in error. They wanted my permission to resume the application process, which I granted, but by the time I received my Gold Card, the promo had already expired. Since I was denied an account due to an error by American Express, I feel I should still qualify for this promo. If I hadn't been denied my account in the first place, I would've had plenty of time to register for this promo.

I've made multiple calls to both American Express and Delta with no luck or progress. They keep telling me to call the other company. I really feel like I got scammed.

I've read some of the threads/posts and it's quite obvious that many of you are seasoned pros when it comes to airlines and mileage. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to get my mileage, which I think I deserve.

Just to give you a brief background, I'm a Silver Medallion that just recently qualified for Gold status for next year. My mileage total for this promo period was approximately 20,000 miles. Thanks for reading!!
