i know theres got to be some engineering or physics principle that makes this possible, but i thought knots were similar to mph. google says 100 knots ~ 115 mph. how does the flight reach upwards of 500 mph even with strong tailwinds? i know its got to be possible because it sometimes takes only like 4 hours on a 2475 mile flight, but i never understood how it worked
The airline flies through the air at about 450 to 480 knots, ~515 to 550 mph. If the air is moving (wind) then their ground speed will be their airspeed plus (tailwind) or minus (headwind) the wind.
