Great point number_6 - and I can confirm (from bitter previous experience!) that QF most certainly follow the very similar policy. If they upgrade pax. enough in advance of a flight then it does not necessarily get in the way, but if it is one of those 'sort it out as the last few paxs are checking in/boarding' op. upgrade situations, having a special meal in the booking (even as a Platinum like me) will almost certainly mean that you are not the one upgraded. (Thus why I have not ordered a veggie/special meal on QF for some years!).
