Actually, when Marriott increased the points needed for MVCI awards earlier this year, they also changed how those awards work. I do believe the "Studio" room side of a villa is now the equivalent of a Cat. 6 room award for most MVCI properties. If you want a 1,2 or 3 bedroom villa, then you have to add the appropriate number of upgrade awards.
So MVCI awards should now be usable with the hotel portion of a Travel award.
As for bsdstone's question on when we went to the Caymans, that would have been sometime in May if I remember correctly. I think that the Pointsaver awards were valid for most of Spring and Summer. And if I remember some posts here, I think that the Cayman RC offered them again this year as well. So there may be a good chance they will accept them again next year. (Actually I just checked at the Cayman RC was listed as accepting them for Fall 2009 as well which is valid through Dec. 31, 2009, but not for the Winter 2010 Qtr which runs through Mar. 31, 2010.)
They also included a 5 night package for timeshare owners.
