I've had experiences where the printer doesn't work in the business center (Sheraton Taipei just last month). What did I do? Asked the front desk to print my boarding pass for me, which they did with no problems. And, as others noted, you don't need to print a BP to check in online on a blackberry or laptop.

Regarding the wake-up call factor, maybe an apology, but certainly not compensation. For early morning flights when traveling with others, I usually set a wake up call, but also have the others call me to make sure I'm up. The way I look at it, the wake-up call is great, but you need to be responsible for waking yourself up - that's what alarm clocks & cell phones are for - i usually have all 3 options to wake me up with.
