Yeah, I'm not a big fan of the system they have there either, but it's better than a motion activated or IR system. I usually just ask for 2 keys and leave one in the wall. It's worked so far.
I'm not sure about Westin, but I don't believe most of those systems are dependent on the actual room key being put in the slot - you could put in a grocery store discount card or anything that is the size of a credit card and it would keep the power on.
