Ineffective. I tried this while sitting next to a person who used a blanket to cover their face when coughing. I also was sitting at the aisle and tried looking away.
The next time this happens, I'll try to move (not practical with packed flights) wear a mask and give a mask to the person coughing. I have 2 in my carry on now.
