Regarding availabilty on United versus Aeroplan. Yes, United has lots of flights which is why I have used my United Mileage Plus to the extent where I have depleted my account. As for Aeroplan (legacy) I have called the Aeroplan Centre in the past and they didn't allow me to use the Aeroplan miles on those United flights, even though United Mileage Plus showed them as available Award seats. They told me that there is a difference between a seat marketed as a "Star Alliance" seat and one marketed as a "United Airlines Seat". I though that this was bunch of BS ( I thought this only applied to flights) but after using the Aeroplan tool and doing many dummy searches and cross-checking with the United Mileage Plus tool there appears to be some truth to this. I'll have to cross reference with the Continental tool now that they are a part of the Star Alliance.
There was one case where Aeroplan made an exception, where they gave me AUS-DEN (DEN-YYC was available) but that was after a very, very painful 2 hours on hold and after some sort of consultation with supervisors etc.
And thanks for the tip on the ANA tool.
