Well, the way I see it working is:

They first announce who's going home. In early rounds this is from a selected subset, in later rounds they all get judged as a group.

They then announce a winner. Again, in early rounds from a subset, in later rounds from the whole group.

They never announce you're #2, 3, etc. So when there are more than three we only know the first and last place - with some relative order in the early rounds.

When they're down to three the same pattern follows. They announce the loser, they then announce the winner, so the only assumption I can make is the other remaining person is #2.

So, yes, I think Kevin was third place last night.
