Thank you for the suggestion. I will try to use multi-city as you mentioned. We have not decided when to fly. Maybe during Japanese Golden-week or US Thanksgiving time. Everything online is kinda easier for me who is not a native English speaker.

Why do you recommend PNRs should be linked?
Without them, I might have higher chance to get upgrades???

Yes, I know it's going to be more complicated if we decide to fly to KMQ. Since only one flight each way btw NRT-KMQ (luckly, the flights are ANA code-shared).

My family is in Tokyo suburban, so NRT might be easier to deal with, but free tickets all the way to KMQ can be redeemed, why not?

New NH 773 is very interesting worth considering. I wish I could be on C or F...

Do you know it's possible to mix between UA and NH in awarded tickets?
Like JFK-SFO-NRT (all UA) and on the way back NRT-JFK (HN).
Also, is it easy to book NH Y ticket?

The cost would be an issue to get NH ticket on .bomb, usually ridiculous price tag can be found for the flights over 3 months ahead or so. Then award tickets are better to reserve ASAP.

KIX idea is also worth considering since my son is crazy about trains, though he rather watch them than ride on them...

CO idea is may work for us since we live in NJ, and the closest airport is EWR.
I know it's painful to fly E over 12 hours.

I hate JFK, to be honest with you since it is the furthermost airport we can reach and parking/tolls is ridicurous for 2 weeks trip, worth MR run to west coast. Limo is about $250-$300 round trip...

Well, thank you for your advise, and any further comments are all welcomed.
I will let you know once decision's made.
