I've found Thai Airways, at minimum, to be very flexible, so wouldn't necessarily agree with you.

Last year, I showed up at BKK for the return flight of an Asia 1 award a full day early and asked that they put me on an earlier flight - it was no problem. YMMV, of course, but I think going directly to the airline's office might be the best idea in this case, as Aeroplan will not likely be able to help over the phone (due to a routing change after departure). TG, on the other hand, might just simply make a notation and protect the rest of the booking (something AC probably can't do even if they wanted to).
