What, exactly, are the terms of entry to (what) airline lounges, when one has the AmEx Plat card?

Does one need to be flying on that airline, that day, to get in? Or could one just go in and out as they please, say, when picking someone else up at the airport?

How does this work for those airlines while abroad, at airports outside of the USA?
