Question regarding free tickets and purchasing a ticket in a family

(Moderator, If I post this incorrect place, please move to appropriate thread, thanks)

I have enough milage to fly from NYC (probably EWR...JFK) to NRT or KMQ (my wife's home) for 2 people, with saver in Y.

However, I have one son who is over 2 yr old, so I need one more ticket.

For saver award tickets, .bomb shows far more interesting itns than purchased ones; on the other hand, regular ticket booking online gets disturbed so much with continental codeshare ones, so I could not get the same flights as reward ones.

My priority is...
1. Family stays on the same flights
2. Get good chunk of mileage for myself (expect to be 1P in 2010)
2.01 Convenient schedule for my son about 3 yrs old and "would complain" wife if my son is unhappy.

Here is my question; which do you recommend from options below in given situation above

1. Book awarded tickets online, and call UA to book the same flights as awarded one. I know the risk would be high price...

2. Call UA to get award and paid tickets all together.

3. Book paid ticket online if somehow I can find a good milage/convenient flights soley by UA operated, and book the awared tickets online or by phone.

Thank you for your expertise,
