I think there 'no preset spending limit' is shoddy too.
I tried to charge a one off £8k pounds on my card; it was refused - I queried why as there was 'no preset limit' and they said in fact there is a limit - we just don't tell you. My limit at the time was £7k. They offered to call my bank to see if I had funds to clear the balance but as I was waiting on an expense payment from my employer it wouldn't have done much good.
I put the transaction on my UA VISA in the end and took advantage of 56 days free credit and got 8000 UA miles!!
I too only really have the Platinum for the benefits - free insurance, lounge access, free MR and BA Amex card etc etc
