Your comments are off-topic. The thread is titled Continental Express Gate Check. If a carry on bag comes anywhere close to touching the sides of a standard sizing box, it will NOT fit on a COex overhead bin. That is the reason for the gate check for COex. If you have a general concern over carry on for the larger planes, start a new thread.
