There cannot be two flights in the air at the same time with the same flight number. They add the letter to differentiate between two flights with the same fight number.

do they add a letter or completely change the flight call sign? i was on a flight jfk-sfo where it was also the same flight number sfo-asia (sorry can't remember the flight # ) and where we were going to be late, the captain announced that ch9 would be on but said that our call sign would be united8865 as opposed to our regular flight number.
