LAN call center WILL tell you you can't change your flight for earlier in the day but the truth is that in every class of service you are allowed to standby (Subject to Space available) for free for an earlier flight. Even on award tickets.
I have done this many times before, just arrive to the airport, contact check-in staf and ask to be put in the Standby List.
