1. You can inform them if you like, but even if you don't when they see you didn't board they will give your seat away to a standby pax or NRSA if any are waiting for one.
2. There won't be any negative repercussions.. I've thrown away a final segment myself before (but only two times in memory of all the years I've flown UA). If you don't make a habit of it they're not going to bother you.

The difference in ticket price is $140; the biggest issue would probably be checked baggage.
Of course, the
real issue would be passing up a very short flight that earns 500 EQMs that's already been paid for.
But then, how would one get back from Modesto? The ACE train goes to Lodi I think. Guess I could check Amtrak?
