I recently became a Gold status member and have been wondering about this guaranteed economy class seat benefit.

From reading this forum I read that some people used this rule to get an almost guaranteed business class upgrade on very busy routes (e.g. knowing that economy is full, they have to put them in Business).

But I just read some post where the guy said he was enjoying his savings? Does this mean that you can buy any of the regular economy fare class tickets even when they're not available to regular passengers anymore? I always made the assumption that when using your guaranteed economy class benefit you would be forced to buy the most expensive fare ticket.

I fly very often at the last minute and as a result often have to buy the more expensive fare tickets because the cheaper fare tickets are 'sold out'.

Also, if this is the case, does it work when I book directly on the CX website or do I need to call their reservations hotline to book the cheaper tickets?

Would really appreciate it if someone could clear this up for me.
