As a D3, if you meal-list in Y, you fly Y or nothing.
If you meal-list in F or J ... same thing.
It may have changed - I've not seen the on-the-ground situation the last year or so since I no longer have flight privs, but some GAs are friendly others aren't - the friendly ones might offer to re-list you if they see availability. But it's hit or miss. Especially if they think you are management.
(There was a LOVELY man in London who finally got me out on the 3rd day of trying ... and there was a GA in DFW who sniffed down her nose to her fellow GA about 'those people' and made us wait until the last second on a totally open flight, but another GA in DFW who said - 'oh, F is open, why aren't you doing that?' and gave me a BP an hour before flight time - YMMV)
