Yeah, I've had to do this on UA, AA, and NW. Just give them a call, explain that you got your orders changed, and more often than not they'll execute the change/cancellation no questions asked. Once, I think, I had to show a copy of my orders to an airport ticket agent (forget the carrier), but then quickly got the refund processed after that.
