It's funny, but I just looked at my company emails and there it was, a new policy implemented by United as of TODAY, saying that FA's are to not let passengers take pictures within the cabin to ensure the privacy of our passengers and the security issues that could arise. So there you have it, it is United policy.

I don't make them up, but I do enforce our policies, and I see the reason behind it. I don't want to be in other people's photo's on planes either.

I enjoy the pictures in Trip Reports and on Airliners.net of the seats and the meals so hope there is some discretion. That said, awhile back there were a bunch of pics of Ashley Olsen asleep taken on a PS flight. Taking pictures of other passengers on a plane definitely IMHO crosses the line. It's a shame that some obnoxious folks make it more difficult for people who simply want to take pics for mundane personal use.
