Anyone can order you to do anything. The question is do you have to comply. While many post that you MUST comply with all crew member instructions, those instructions have to be reasonable AND legal. I'm not aware of any crew member having the authority to confiscate anything that is not a direct threat to safety, and there is no way a camera fits that bill. They can just as easily handle such matters when the plane reaches its destination and law enforcement or supervisory personnel are available.
