I don't know the answer, but IMHO, at least as big an issue is the poor treatment afterwards.

In any case, how are they going to know if you deleted it ? In your situation I would have said, "oh sorry, didn'y know; yes I deleted it". But no way would I be willing to turn over my camera (or phone) to them to check.
