The reason it's the #1 attraction is because they promote the heck out of it. They have various packages from inexpensive to very expensive. It seems they have a booth set up in many different tourist spots on the island, such as in the center of Waikiki and in the Ala Moana Shopping Center.
It's certainly not the #1 attraction because what they do is good. It's not. It's fake and kitschy. I went to their evening show when I was staying on that side of the island and it was all I could do to keep from walking out.
There are better ways to spend your money on Oahu. If you want to go to a commercial/mass luau - Paradise is decent.
What is "fake" or "kitschy" compared to other similar venues?
To each his own, but the majority of people seem to disagree that it is "not good." It's been #1 in Hawaii for many, many years.
