I know that at the corp. I work for, we have systemwide discounts with Starwood and Hilton (and even deeper discounts at Starwoods and Hiltons that our travellers frequent). Our discounts with other chains (namely Marriott) are NOT systemwide, they are on a hotel-by-hotel basis and are only avaiable at hotels close to our ops in cities where there is not a Starwood or Hilton nearby. It is possible that your AMEX code (much like mine) only works at a dozen or so Marriotts. Hope this helps.
