The official answer is no, as to earn points the bill needs to be settled in your name, however as with many things in the hotel industry your mileage may vary. While it is true that the upgrade and diamond benefits should only be awarded if you too are occupying the room, as long as you are not making a habit of this I do not see a problem with it. If you are personally checking in with your dad, I do not see this any different than a mattress run in which one checks in, messes up the room, and then never sets another foot inside the hotel (obviously other than the credit card issue) or how some book multiple rooms and have benefits extended to all rooms instead of the one they are personally occupying. As for the holier than thou attitude of some on this board, it would be interesting to know the personal actions of them in situations other than the one mentioned.
