if you are checking him in, then by all means, book the room in your name and request the upgrade and then at checkout get the room changed to his name.
make sure you join him in the program and he will get the points.

but

If you are not checking him in then thats another ball game.
As soon as you request the suite,
then the whole booking will be in your name and unless he takes the chance and books in- in your name
the upgrade will disappear.
Only the diamond member can upgrade his or her own room.
