I think the choice between the Skytrain and Tristar is a tough one. The B&R convertable is an interesting option as well. Trying the much cheaper ebags is a pretty good suggestion. One other note, I have the Skytrain and like it a lot. I don't know where you read that about the backpack straps, I think they are very comfortable. The shoulder strap I didn't like so I put that on a briefcase (which isn't as heavy) and put a Tom Bihn shoulder strap on the Skytrain. Problem solved.
