Flights get put in holding patterns depending on the arrival, traffic, weather, and so many other factors. If the flight burned up its holding fuel, then it has to divert. UA doesn't divert planes for no good reason as you suggest.

I would bet UA updates based on when they estimate the plane to leave. When it doesn't, it gets pushed back.
