I have found too many people misunderstand just what the "Bereavement Fare" is. It is rarely cheaper than the lowest available price, but it is cheaper than the full "Y" price. The benefit of the bereavement fare is the flexibility of making any changes you need without penalty and allowing you the freedom to not worry about rushing back home. Basically, it is a slightly discounted "Y" ticket with the full freedom and flexibility of a full "Y" ticket.

If flexibility is your goal, Bereavement Fares are great. If a cheap ticket is your goal, these fares will not suit your needs.
