I realize that the hotel staff offering you the Plat amenity choice and automatically giving you lounge access (when there is one of course) would be best and preferable. But IMHO, it isn't much of a problem to just ask about the amenity and the access while you are checking in. It takes all of a couple of seconds and if there is no lounge or the lounge is closed, it provides a chance for you to ask if a free breakfast is offered. As mentioned, free breakfast isn't really a standard elite benefit with Starwood, but you may be able to talk a particular hotel into giving it to you anyways. But only if you ask.
