The connecting flight on B6 between JFK-BUF isn't a bad idea provided you padded the flights considerably with the runway construction at JFK, i say 5 hrs is a good starting point.
Considering it's February and BUF, you may want suggest BUF-JFK the night before the CX flight... just in case.
Also, I would imagine you could find a much cheaper BUF-JFK B6 flight when the winter fare sales start.
