I only ever tried to use the checkin at Paddington once, for an early morning BD flight, and it was closed because of "staff shortages".

I think the HEX trains still have the dedicated luggage areas at one end that were used to transport checked bags, and if you wander down to the far end of the platforms at Paddington you can see the ramps going down to the tunnel where there were transported from "The Lawn".
