Flying as a 1K.

April 2, IAD-DME, in C on an upgraded W fare of $825 roundtrip from LAX. There were no tablecloths or bread plates and just served on a tray. The FA came around later with a card and apologized for the meal service which was "not up to international business class standards".

I chose a $200 e-voucher as my compensation.

Sept 26, IAD-BDL, in F on an upgraded roundtrip fare of $260 from LAX (and used the $200 voucher from the DME trip to get a net fare of $60).

The flight was delayed for mechanical reasons and departed about an hour late at 6PM. Halfway to BDL the guy upfront said that the mechanical issue had not been resolved and that the equipment needed to fix it was not available at BDL. We turned around and went back to IAD.

It was about 7:15 when we got back to IAD and they said there would be a replacement 757 for us to board at 8:45 and departing at 9:15.

I went to the customer service counter to tell them that they needed to put our flight info back on the departures board. I was concerned that other pax might not have heard the new plan, for 9:15, and try to get on the 10:15 flight.

Anyway, while I was at the counter the lady next to me got a voucher for a hotel for the night and would fly to BDL the next morning. So, I asked my agent what compensation they could offer me for a delay of 4 hours. He said he could give me a hotel voucher in DC to which I said "no thanks".

He noted that I was a 1K and went to speak to his supervisor When he came back he said that the best they could do was a $150 voucher, which I accepted.

To my great surprise, they actually had a plane at the designated gate at 8:45ish and we departed at 9:15!

On board, the pilot mentioned the url for the customer appreciation webpage. No card was handed out like on the DME flight.

But, by the time I got to my hotel near BDL I already had an e-mail from United apologizing for the delay and a link to the customer appreciation webpage (united.com/appreciation). The compensation choices included 20% off an int'l trip or some 500-milers or some RDMs. I chose a $350 domestic voucher.

Ends up that the two trips cost $1085 but yielded $700 in vouchers.
