I thought I'd seen something, in the new awards structure, about a multi-night points price break starting with two nights, but I'm not seeing that now; if there is one, that could change the question, but: if there's a straight points per night charge and I book a 2-night stay before the point devaluation, and cancel the second night after it (well before the stay), will the one night be charged at the old rate? I saw the early check-out penalty thread from the FAQ, and the suggestion to book successive one-night stays, with the chance that the hotel would merge them into one. How would it affect this stay?
It's better to book as 2 single night stays. The hotel will not merge them. But you may be required to check out and then check back in after the first night (just a technicality, usually don't have to change rooms). If you have a 2-night award and change it to a 1 night, you will be charged at the new single rate. Per the rules, ANY changes in pre-existing res will be charged at the new rate. If you book as 2 singles nights, you can cancel one without affecting the other.
BTW, the new awards multi-night discount begin with 4-night stays, not 2 nights.
