I was comp'd platinum. Read all about it here. I'm not sure whether it was because of my previous spend and projected stays, or whether I was already a Hilton diamond. At any rate, I had to ask and sent them the documentation, so it can be done. Just don't expect to walk in off the street and ask for elite status.
