You know I used to really like this hotel, but as the leader (at least here on FT) in the downward trend it really annoys me. I have a res next June at the LAX Marriott and have been checking prices of both for a better rate. Ren LAX will have to do real good price wise to get me to switch.
It is absolutely ridiculous that we have to go through crap like this to get these measly benefits.
If I were you I would get the Westin up the street on speed dial and be ready to call them during your chat with the GM. I would also let corporate know about this situation. I think we all need to start complaining more to Marriott corporate. When they get tired of hearing all the complaints, maybe they will return some of the benefits, or at least deliver the ones they promise.
Another thing that occurred to me the other day, is we ALL could start calling these offender hotels and let them know we are on to their tactics and that we do not intend on frequenting their hotel.

this was a one nighter for me; I'm moving to a local Hyatt property for the rest of the trip today (not b/c of this incident) but I won't drop it thats for sure.. i'll keep you posted
this thread is really a FYI for future holiday travelers to this property as to expect a hassle
I used to LOVE this place and it was my favorite property in L.A... now its an also ran
