As for in this case, I believe it only happens once or twice a year (the winds issue.) Maybe someone else has more accurate data. I'm pretty sure you would have a greater chance of having the airline lose your luggage or being over sold.

Anyways, it's unfortunate how they handled the situation. Sounds like in SEA they did fine (trying to keep everyone updated with what they knew.) And it was nice they told you on board about your bag. Not sure about LIH though, I think all the positions in Hawaii are outsourced, and there has been some complaints about that. I wish they would use actual Alaska employees.
I know UA runs KOA and OGG and DL runs HNL... can't recall about LIH- But yes, it'd be nice to have real AS employees there...
