How long in to the flight do you see the sahara?
For many hours.

I prefer JNB flights, which often cross the coast in the vicinity of Tunis, then proceed to Seba Oasis before changing course and flying straight over the Tibesti Massif. Absolutely spectacular, especially if you are lucky enough to fly over the highest peaks, which rise to a height of over 3,400 meters. Black needles shooting straight up at the aircraft.

Flights to DAR and NBO generally follow a more easterly course. Not many mountains, but plenty of time to study the shifting colors of the Sahara. With a bit of luck, you will fly east of the Nile past Khartoum, giving you great views of both river and desert bathing in the light of the setting sun.

The European portion of these flight can be quite interesting too. Sometimes you fly along the Rhine all the way to Friedrichshafen on the Bodensee, then across the Alps, then past Lago di Garda and either across Sardinia and/or Sicily, or past cities like Genua, Rome or Athens.

As long as the weather is clear, you can keep your nose glued to the window all the way. Even after dark you often get spectacular thunderstorms in the vicinity of the equator. Storms at sunset are even prettier.
