An easy way to get to central Rome is to take the metro. For example, based on the route given at atac.rome.it, you could walk 700 meters to the metro, and take line B for 6 stops to Colosseo. It's not as good as actually being in the center, I agree, but it could be worse. Also check when the metro terminates at night.
