I have been Marriott top tier (Platinum or Black) for many years and also can count the number of suite upgrades on one hand.

My wife is Starwood Platinum and gets a suite upgrade most of the time. It is another story with her Hyatt Diamond status, which always gets her the best regular room in the house, but only occasionally a suite.
