You followed the rules of renting the room as dictated on the reservation. You should have a confirmation number that guarantees the rate with certain conditions. I would call Marriott CS and tell them that you are not willing to pay in advance for the room, unless, of course, early payment is stated as a condition in the reservation rules for this particular reservation. You have a binding contract for that room at the lower rate. I find it condescending that Marriott would respond in this manner. While it appears that Marriott is doing the "right" thing here, I see it as a means of extorting monies from you due to their error. Besides, what happens if you cannot attend due to some unforeseen circumstance? If the reservation was made verbally, you have the standard cancellation of 6:00PM (or what special time is selected for this date) to cancel without penalty. If the reservation was made online, you may be subject to a loss of one night as per standard online reservation policy but that would be better than losing a whole week.
