I wouldn't worry about getting AMEX involved if you're going to speak with Alamo today. If Alamo gives you any more pushback, though, it might be prudent to at least notify AMEX of the claim--one of the common reasons credit card issuers decline claims is because they weren't notified in a timely fashion (the time limits vary by card association).
If you purchased the Damage Waiver, your credit card company is not going to cover you, as you need to DECLINE coverage. Having said that, if Alamo took as long as you say to notify you of the damage should be ok, unless they can show the car was not rented after you retunred it and the claim was related to undercarriage damage rendering it undrivable, you may be on the hook. In any event if you took CDW or WAIVER saver that should cover up to the limits of the coverage.
